Mary is a Presidents’ Professor of Sculpture at Arizona State University, where her practice involves sculptural, interactive data visualization. She has shown her works nationally and internationally, and has completed many public art projects. Sea Ice Extent was developed from daily data from a sea ice sensor outside of Nuvuk, the northernmost point of the United States. Here, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. This area is ground zero for climate change, and sea ice extent is an important indicator. Cool and severe, this totem marks what is to come.
