Both pieces are part of my Nandri Vanakkam (Thank you, Goodbye) series. It’s a body of work that reflects the conflicts of identity I experience as a first generation American from a Tamil household. Forced to follow an arranged marriage as a South Indian woman, these sculptures focus on the traditional jewelry a bride wears. I’ve taken these normally elegant objects and disfigured or displaced them. They are a testimony to how I crave the beauty of my culture but also wish to be free from its binds.
